Compare inflatable SUP samples by testing them against one buyer-controlled specification and recording the conditions, observations, measurements, accessories, packaging, and unresolved questions in the same review form. Do not rank samples by appearance, board weight, or a supplier’s marketing terms alone. The result should show which sample conforms, which differences are acceptable, and what must be corrected or verified before supplier approval.
This sample-evaluation guide is for product managers and purchasing managers comparing two or more manufacturers. It does not set universal pressure, tolerance, or pass/fail values. Those requirements must come from the approved product brief, technical specification, intended market, and qualified testing or compliance resources where applicable.
Define the Comparison Before Samples Arrive
Start by writing the decision the review must support. For example:
- Select a supplier for one defined SUP model
- Compare two proposed constructions for the same retail position
- Decide whether a lower-cost sample still meets the approved product requirement
- Identify which supplier needs another sample round
Then issue one comparison baseline. It should identify the intended board category, finished dimensions, construction requirement, fitting layout, artwork, accessories, packaging, required evidence, and intended use.
If each manufacturer receives a different brief, the samples do not answer the same question. Treat supplier-proposed alternatives as separate options and record exactly what changed.

Confirm Sample Identity and Documentation
Before opening the cartons, assign each sample an internal comparison code. Photograph the unopened package and record:
- Supplier and sample reference
- Date received
- Product and specification revision
- Artwork and packaging revision
- Declared construction and component list
- Included accessories
- Supplier-recommended working pressure
- Any approved deviation or unconfirmed item
A sample should not be scored against a specification that the supplier never received. If the supplier used a different revision, hold the affected category and resolve the document mismatch first.
Where practical, let the evaluation team use internal sample codes during the first review. This reduces the chance that price, supplier familiarity, or a polished presentation influences observations before the physical product has been assessed.
Use Comparable Conditions, Not Artificially Identical Conditions
The comparison method should be consistent, but every numeric setting should not automatically be identical.
Use the same:
- Review form and sequence
- Measurement tools and method
- Inflation equipment and pressure-gauge verification
- Stabilization approach
- Ambient-condition recording
- Support positions and loading method for any agreed flex check
- Lighting and viewing distance for appearance review
- Intended-use test route or scenario
- Packing and unpacking procedure
Pressure requires special care. If both samples are approved for the same operating pressure, a common condition may support a direct comparison. If their approved pressure ranges differ, do not inflate either sample outside its supplier-confirmed limit merely to make the numbers match. Test at the applicable approved condition and display that condition beside every result. If a claim requires a direct common-pressure comparison, first confirm that the selected pressure is valid for both products.
Do not copy a test duration, pressure, load, or acceptance limit from a general web page. ALS describes broad quality-control areas in its quality assurance overview, but the buyer must confirm the method and acceptance basis for the specific model.
Compare the Samples in Seven Decision Categories
1. Specification Conformity
Check whether each sample matches the issued requirement before judging which one feels better.
Review:
- Finished dimensions and outline
- Rocker, thickness profile, and shape consistency where controlled
- Valve, fin system, handles, D-rings, bungee, deck pad, and fitting positions
- Artwork scale, position, orientation, and color reference
- Finished product weight only when the configuration and measurement method are defined
Record the actual observation or measurement, the requirement, and the deviation. “Looks correct” is not a traceable result.
2. Construction and Material Evidence
Compare the construction against the written supplier submission and buyer requirement. Review the declared drop-stitch, face layers, rails, reinforcement locations, fittings, and other relevant elements.
A finished sample cannot prove every internal material or process claim. Separate:
- What can be observed or measured on the sample
- What is supported by a material record, drawing, or test report
- What remains a supplier statement requiring verification
Do not assume two constructions are equivalent because both use terms such as “fusion,” “double layer,” or “premium PVC.” Ask each manufacturer to define its construction in comparable fields.
3. Inflation, Shape, and Air Retention
Follow the project-specific inflation and inspection method. Record the pressure, relevant temperatures, stabilization period, start and finish times, and any adjustment made during the review.
Observe:
- Inflation behavior and valve operation
- Twist, uneven thickness, local bulging, or unexpected shape
- Rail alignment and overall symmetry
- Indications of leakage at the valve, rails, or fittings
- Pressure result using the agreed method and acceptance basis
Do not interpret a pressure change without the test conditions. Temperature and stabilization differences can make two readings look comparable when they are not.
4. Workmanship and Fitting Installation
Inspect the board systematically from nose to tail and repeat the same sequence for every sample.
Check:
- Rail finish and transitions
- Valve and fin-box installation
- Handle, D-ring, leash-point, and other fitting patches
- Deck-pad alignment, adhesion, texture, and edge finish
- Printing or applied graphics
- Surface contamination, wrinkles, trapped air, lifted edges, excess adhesive, or other observable workmanship issues
Photograph each finding with a location reference and scale where useful. Classify it according to the buyer’s approved defect definitions rather than inventing a severity level during the review.
5. Functional and Intended-Use Performance
Bench inspection cannot fully show how the product performs in its intended application. Use the same qualified evaluator, route, loading approach, and observation form where practical.
Depending on the model and approved evaluation plan, compare:
- Stability and tracking
- Turning response
- Rigidity or flex under the agreed method
- Deck grip and usable standing area
- Carrying balance
- Fin installation and removal
- Paddle clearance and fitting interference
- Inflation, deflation, folding, and repacking
Record conditions and observations instead of using unsupported claims such as “more stable” or “faster.” If the samples differ in dimensions or category, explain whether the performance difference is an intended design trade-off or a failure to meet the same brief.
6. Accessories and Compatibility
Review the complete sellable set, not only the board.
Confirm:
- Accessory type, model, quantity, and branding
- Fit and compatibility with the board
- Pump, hose, gauge, fin, leash, paddle, bag, and repair materials as applicable
- Instructions and identification of replacement parts
- Ease of packing the complete set without forced compression or damage
A stronger board sample can still be the weaker commercial option if the accessory package is incomplete, incompatible, or inconsistent with the approved quotation.
7. Packaging and Pack-Out
Use the approved retail and shipping requirements. Check:
- Protection of the folded board and fittings
- Separation and restraint of accessories
- Manual, warning, label, and barcode versions
- Retail package and shipping-carton condition
- Carton marks and product identification
- Packed dimensions and weight recorded using the agreed method
- Ability to repack the product in a repeatable sequence
Packaging performance for parcel delivery or a specific fulfillment channel requires its own defined validation. A visually neat carton does not establish distribution suitability.
Build One Evidence-Based Comparison Sheet
Use one row per requirement and one column per sample. A practical structure is:

Do not replace missing information with a score. Mark it “not confirmed,” identify the owner, and state whether the gap blocks the decision.
Use Scores Only After Applying Non-Negotiable Gates
A weighted score can help summarize many acceptable differences, but it must not hide a critical failure.
Apply gates first. A sample remains on hold if, for example:
- Its identity or controlling revision is unclear
- A required component or accessory is incompatible
- A critical requirement is not met
- The test method or evidence is not comparable
- A safety, compliance, or destination-market question needs qualified review
- The supplier changed the construction without approval
After the gates are passed, weight the remaining categories according to the buyer’s business case. A rental operator may emphasize serviceability and repeated handling; an e-commerce brand may give more weight to packaging, accessory completeness, and repacking. The weighting should be agreed before results are known.
Close the Review With a Clear Supplier Decision
Finish with one of four outcomes:
- Approve: The sample meets the controlled requirement and required evidence is complete.
- Conditional approval: Limited gaps have written actions, owners, due dates, and a defined closure method.
- Resample: Changes could affect the product decision and must be shown in a revised physical sample.
- Reject or redesign: The proposal does not fit the approved requirement or would require a different product brief.
Issue one consolidated finding list to each manufacturer. Link every corrective request to a photograph, measurement, document reference, or test record. When a revised sample arrives, retest the changed feature and any connected characteristics that could also have been affected.
The best sample is not necessarily the one with the fewest visible imperfections. It is the one that meets the buyer’s defined product and commercial requirements with the clearest evidence and the fewest unresolved approval risks.
